On the afternoon of April 8, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the School of Foreign Languages solemnly held the Donation Ceremony for the Liu Zuwei Scholarship Fund and a series of alumni homecoming activities. Mr. Liu Zuwei was the founder of the Department of Science and Technology Foreign Languages. Present at the event were Ms. Liu Yiming and Mr. Gu Huizhong, family members of Mr. Liu Zuwei; alumni representatives including those from the Class of 1986; Prof. Shang Biwu, Dean of the SFL; Prof. Zhu Yifan, Party Secretary of the SFL; Ms. Li Yi, Deputy Secretary-General of the SJTU Education Development Foundation; members of the SFL leadership, as well as faculty and student representatives. The ceremony was presided over by Tao Qing, Vice Dean of the SFL.
Dean Shang Biwu delivered a welcome address, introducing the SFL’s history, disciplinary development, talent cultivation and academic achievements. He stressed that the SFL would continue to aim at international academic frontiers, focus on national strategies and social needs, center on talent cultivation, and contribute SJTU foreign language strengths to the Chinese modernization drive
Vice Dean Tao Qing introduced the Liu Zuwei Scholarship Fund. As a key founder of foreign language education at SJTU, Mr. Liu Zuwei established the Department of Science and Technology Foreign Languages in the late 1970s. Initiated by alumni from the 1980s, the fund was established to encourage students to stay true to their original aspiration and pursue academic excellence.
Representatives of donating alumni, Ms. Pan Di, Prof. Adili Jumaturdi and Ms Wu Yong, recalled their study years at SJTU and shared their career experiences. They expressed their willingness to support talent development and pass on the SJTU spirit of “Gratitude for the Source, Patriotism and Devotion to the University”.
Ms. Liu Yiming, on behalf of the Liu family, fondly remembered her father’s lifelong dedication to foreign language education and cultivation of students. She encouraged young students to carry forward Mr. Liu Zuwei’s spirit of rigorous scholarship and selfless dedication, live up to the times and youth, and strive to become pillars of the nation.
Tao Qing read a letter of thanks to all donors. Shang Biwu, Zhu Yifan and Li Yi presented letters of thanks to the donating alumni and family representatives, with warm applause and sincere sentiments filling the venue.
Li Yi, on behalf of the SJTU Education Development Foundation, congratulated the establishment of the fund. She noted that the Foundation would ensure proper management and efficient use of donations to support the SFL’s talent cultivation and development.
Zhu Yifan concluded that the event was a tribute to Mr. Liu Zuwei and embodied alumni’s care and support for their alma mater. She pledged that the SFL would inherit the spirit of its predecessors, uphold its educational mission, and cultivate more new-era foreign language talents with global vision and patriotism.
Marking the 130th anniversary of SJTU, the School of Foreign Languages will stay committed to its educational mission, unite alumni strength, deepen discipline construction and talent training, and strive for new achievements in its development together with all faculty, students and alumni.
